Archaeological Museum of Banyoles
The museum, located in the Gothic building of Pia Almoina, contains collections of artefacts discovered at the archaeological sites of the Pla de l'Estany region. A visit to the museum allows examining the history of the region from the prehistoric times up to the Middle Ages.
The palaeontology and prehistory sections include fossil remains of large animals from the Tertiary and beginning of the Quaternary periods, industrial and fauna collections from the Serinyà Caves and artefacts from the Neolithic village of La Draga. In the history section there is material from the Iberian, Roman and Medieval periods.
The museum is made up of three recently refurbished inner areas, each of which has a different function. On the one hand, the archaeological archives guarantee the conservation of materials deposited there, given that storage areas contain compact cabinets in air-conditioned rooms. On the other hand, there is a consultation and research rooms where the archaeological materials can be consulted and studied. The museum also includes a library and document centre.
