New Edition of LIPHE4 Summer School at ICTA-UAB
The Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB) will host the forthcoming 2019 edition of the LIPHE4 Summer School, from 8th to 12th July.

The course is co-organized by LIPHE4 and the Horizon2020 project "Moving Towards Adaptive Governance in Complexity: Informing Nexus Security" (MAGIC), led by ICTA-UAB.
Under the title "Complex sustainability challenges: The nexus between water, energy and food", the Summer School aims at familiarizing the participants with the theory and applications of "Multi-scale Integrated Analysis of Society and Ecosystem Metabolism" (MuSIASEM) and Quantitative Story-Telling (QST). In this 2019 edition, the course will illustrate the use of MuSIASEM to carry out relational analysis (nexus approach) of the metabolic pattern of social-ecological systems across different dimensions and scales of analysis in relation to complex sustainability problems dealt with in the Horizon2020 project MAGIC.
More specifically, the course will cover an overview of the challenges posed to governance by complex sustainability problems and an illustration of a novel approach capable of handling these challenges. The course will offer an introduction to Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM). The MuSIASEM accounting framework is an alternative to economic analyses in that it not only considers changes in the material standard of living, but also in environmental and social factors. MuSIASEM uses relational analysis to build a quantitative representation of the metabolic pattern of social-ecological systems.
The material presented draws on the results from the EU-funded Horizon 2020 project “Moving Towards Adaptive Governance in Complexity: Informing Nexus Security” (MAGIC – https://magic-nexus.eu/).
The format of the summer school consists in seminars alternated with hands-on working groups that will apply the theoretical concepts to practical cases. The course is aimed at advanced students, researchers, and practitioners. Participants are expected to have an interest in learning about novel approaches and ideas related to social-ecological systems, integrated assessment, and sustainable development.
