Organic Geochemistry and Environmental Laboratory
Characterization of the organic fraction of environmental samples. This includes both the isotopic determination of bulk TOC, and the identification of organic compounds at trace levels. The areas of research involve both past environmental reconstruction and identification of organic pollutants in the environment.
The IMPACTANT (SGR) group is fully equipped for the analysis of environmental samples (sediments, air particulate, water samples, and animal tissues) by means of chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques.
The available instrumentation includes:
- Sample preparation facilities (e.g. Accelerated Solvent Extractor AE 350; microwave-assisted extraction systems, Ultrasonic bath).
- Facilities for sample digestion for inorganic and organic analyses (microvawe assisted CEM-MARS-Xpress, CEM-MARS-6).
- Equipment to concentrate and evaporate sample extracts (e.g. Laboratory evaporator TurboVap, Centrifugal vacuum concentrator, Vacuum manifold, and rotaevaporators).
- Gas Chromatography (GC-FID) and mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
- Liquid chromatography: HPLC-UV, and HPLC-MS/MS (triple-quad) systems.
