During 2018, ICTA-UAB researchers Sara Mingorría and María Heras coordinated a pilot environmental education project integrating arts-based approaches and using the environmental conflicts data-base EJAtlas.

The pilot project named “Multicultural expressions of the environmental justice movement” was implemented with undergraduate students at UAB between March and May 2018. It included a final congress hosted at ICTA with the students and invited artivists, who also held participatory workshops on documental photography, participatory activist research, arts-based direct action and video-activism.

As a result, the project has co-produced and published a pedagogical guide for teachers, educators, researchers and activists interested in combining arts, research and education within the framework of political ecology and environmental justice.

The guide contains a description of 5 sessions of two hours each, in which environmental justice songs, image theatre and the online map of environmental conflicts ejatlas.org were applied to allow students approach environmental conflicts in a critical, reflexive and experiential way. Two dissemination videos sharing the experience have also being created. All these materials are open-access and available for use at the web docus-ecoeco.net

This project was funded by the Fundació Autònoma Solidaria and supported by the EU projects ENVJUSTICE and PERFORM. It was developed with the collaboration of Gonzalo Gamboa, Neus Martí, Isabel Ruiz-Mallén, Mar Cartró, Álvaro Fernández-Llamazares and Claudio Cattaneo.
