Title: “What technology for degrowth?”

Speaker: Vasilis Kostakis, is Professor of Technology Governance and Sustainability at TalTech’s Ragnar Nurkse Department of Innovation and Governance.

Date: Tuesday, 21st of May 2024
Time: from 10 to 13h
Venue: Room Z/033

This seminar will explore how to harness both high-tech and low-tech approaches more democratically and sustainably for all ecosystems on this planet. Vasilis will share his experiences and findings from a five-year-long action research project. The study focused on an alternative political economy based on a different framework for technology development, with a strong emphasis on the commons. Just as Adam Smith used his famous pin factory to show that another method of production was possible in the late 18th century, a variety of commons-based "pin factories" today provide alternatives for addressing the major issues of our era. During this seminar, we will discuss these alternative technology cases and their relationship to degrowth.
