The C-Test: Current Trends

02/07/2014
The chapter in question, "C-test as an indicator of general language proficiency in the context of a CBT (SIMTEST)", describes the use of C-Tests to determine an initial level of overall language proficiency and how this assessment can be used as the entry point on a computer adaptive test (CAT).
C-Tests consist of several short texts in which words missing half their letters have to be reconstructed. C-Tests are used in many contexts as extremely economical tests of language proficiency. This collection of papers shows the current state of the art of C-Test research. There are chapters focussing on face validity and C-Test washback, C-Test performance and intelligence, the C-Test as a screening device, relating C-Test scores to the Common European Framework of Reference using ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve) analyses, and the use of C-Tests in the classroom. A special feature of this volume is the comprehensive C-Test bibliography compiled by the editor, which includes 498 entries.
The editor of the book is Dr. Rüdiger Grotjahn, Professor of Second Language Research at the University of Bochum (Germany). His main research interests are second language assessment, research methodology and the study of individual differences in language learning. Grotjahn has been the author and/or editor of more than 230 publications on aspects of language assessment since 1971.
