In February 1975, under the framework of a day of reflection organised by lecturers and students of a very young Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, a document entitled “Per una Universitat nova en una societat democràtica” [For a new university in a democratic society] was passed, which eventually became known as the Bellaterra Manifesto.

The document was the result of a participatory process at a convulsive moment in the country's history, not only for the University but for society as a whole, just a few months before the death of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco.

The 22 points of the Bellaterra Manifesto were the basis of the first democratic Statutes of the University, and the document quickly became a model for universities throughout Spain.

Fifty years later, with the aim not only to remember but also to highlight what the Manifesto meant, analyse the historical context and discuss it with some of the people directly affected by it, the UAB organises a commemorative event open to everyone that will take place on 12 March at 12 noon in the conference hall of the Rectorat building.

Commemorative event

The event will begin with a welcome speech by Javier Lafuente, rector of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and Esther Zapater, secretary general. This will be followed by a conference by Jordi Sancho entitled "Bellaterra Manifesto: building democracy from the University".

Finalment, el rector clourà l’acte acompanyat de la tradicional interpretació del Gaudeamus igitur i amb una invitació a compartir un refrigeri per donar fi a la commemoració.

The UAB Chamber Choir will perform emblematic songs such as D'un temps, d'un país, by Raimon, and The Times They Are a-Changin', by Bob Dylan.

There will also be a round table moderated by Enric Marín, with the participation of prominent personalities such as former rector Margarita Arboix, José Luis Martín Ramos and Borja de Riquer, who will reflect on the historical context and the impact of the Manifesto.

Finally, Rector Lafuente will close the event accompanied by the traditional interpretation of the Gaudeamus igitur and food and beverages will be served to the guests.
