On the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, the FAS publishes its “Guide for Training and Awareness on Female Genital Mutilation”, a document that highlights the need to address this practice from a human rights perspective, avoiding the stigmatisation of affected communities and promoting public policies that combine prevention, awareness and training of professionals in the health, education and social sectors.

The publication is based on the World Health Organisation's definition of FGM as “all procedures that intentionally and for non-medical reasons alter or damage the female genital organs”. This practice, present in different countries and ethnic groups in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and South America, has spread worldwide due to migratory movements and the diaspora, and it is estimated that some 600,000 women are living with its consequences in Europe.

The guide was prepared by the Fundació Autònoma Solidària with the participation of several agents and specialists, including technical staff from the Government of Catalonia, students, lecturers and technicians from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, staff from organisations such as Doctors of the World, the Association of African Women of Terrassa, healthcare professionals and feminist and anti-racist activists. In addition, it was co-financed by the European Union and has been nourished by the experiences and conclusions drawn from the European project CHAT Plus, which has promoted awareness and training actions in schools and other public and community spaces through the activation of young people belonging mainly to communities affected by FGM in Europe.

This document is structured in different chapters that address the issue of FGM from various perspectives. First, it presents the current regulatory framework in Catalonia and in Spain, detailing the laws and protocols to prevent this practice. It also includes training and awareness-raising proposals for professionals and communities, promoting a critical intercultural and intersectional gender approach based on human rights. In addition, it offers strategies to improve public policies and ensure effective protection for survivors. Finally, it compiles academic and institutional resources to facilitate appropriate interventions.

This guide is presented as an essential tool in the fight against FGM, promoting an approach based on social justice, gender equality and respect for human rights. It will soon also be available in English.
