Training for user staff of experimental animals

All personnel participating in an animal experimentation procedure must be recognized for their training by the Department of Territory and Sustainability. Personnel handling animals used, bred or supplied for experimental and other scientific purposes, including teaching, must receive appropriate training and have, by the Department of Territory and Sustainability, the recognition of training for perform autonomously one or more of the following functions:

a. Function to take care of animals
b. Animal euthanasia function
c. Function of carrying out the procedures
d. Design function of projects and procedures
e. Responsible for "on-site" supervision of animal welfare and care
f. Function of designated veterinarian

Request training
Accreditation must be requested before participating in an animal testing procedure.

The procedure must be made personally by the applicant in person at any OGE office or telematically. You can check all the information on the website of the Generalitat.

Documents

In order to be accredited, the following documentation must be submitted, together with the request of the Generalitat de Catalunya:

  1. Diploma of the recognized training course1.
  2. Accreditation of the contents of the training course2.
  3. Certificate from the center on the completion of the work under supervision3.
  4. University degree4.
  5. Vocational training title or certificate of professionalism that includes the learning outcomes included in the modules corresponding to each function, according to Annex I of Order ECC / 566/2015, of March 20, which establishes the training requirements which must be complied with by personnel handling animals used, bred or supplied for experimental and other scientific purposes, including teaching5.
  6. Documentation accrediting knowledge or experience in animal medicine used in experimentation and for other scientific purposes, including teaching6.
  7. Copy of the NIF / NIE, in case you have refused to obtain it

1 For all functions, except as a designated veterinarian if you present documentation demonstrating knowledge or experience in animal medicine used in experimentation and for other scientific purposes, including teaching; and those of animal care, euthanasia and performance of procedures, if you have a professional training degree or certificate of professionalism, which includes the learning outcomes included in the modules corresponding to each function according to Annex I of the ECC Order / 566/2015, of 20 March, which establishes the training requirements that must be met by personnel handling animals used, raised or supplied for experimental purposes and other scientific purposes, including teaching .
2Only for courses taken abroad.
3For the functions of caring for animals, euthanasia and carrying out procedures, unless you have a professional training degree or a certificate of professionalism.
4For project and procedure design functions, “in situ” supervision of the designated animal and veterinary welfare.
5For the functions of caring for animals, euthanasia and performing procedures, without further additional requirements.
6For the function of designated veterinarian as an alternative to the diploma of the course recognized in the function of designated veterinarian.


Requirements

Animal care function (a) / Animal euthanasia function (b) / Procedure performance function (c)
In order to obtain the recognition of the qualification for these functions the fulfillment of some of the following requirements is required:

  1. Be in possession of a professional training degree or certificate of professionalism that includes the learning outcomes included in the modules corresponding to each function according to Annex I of Order ECC / 566/2015, of 20 March, for which sets out the training requirements to be met by personnel handling animals used, bred or supplied for experimental and other scientific purposes, including teaching.
  2. Pass the training courses aimed at achieving the learning outcomes included in the modules corresponding to each function, according to Annex I of Order ECC / 566/2015, of March 20, and the development of a period of work under supervision until the acquisition of the necessary skill to carry out each function autonomously.

Project and procedure design function (d)
In order to obtain the recognition of the qualification for this function the fulfillment of the following requirements is required:

  1. Have a university degree, degree, master's degree or doctorate, or equivalent, in Biology (animal), Medicine, Veterinary Medicine or any other discipline that incorporates studies on animal biology and physiology in its training program.
  2. Pass the training courses aimed at achieving the learning outcomes included in the modules corresponding to this function, according to Annex I of Order ECC / 566/2015, of 20 March.

Those who have a bachelor's, bachelor's, master's or doctor's degree, or equivalent, other than those indicated in 'number 1', and who pass the courses referred to in 'number 2', will also be able to obtain training for this function. , provided that these courses include an additional module on the fundamentals of animal biology and physiology, oriented to the species or group of species involved.

Function of responsible for the "in situ" supervision of animal welfare and care (e)
In order to obtain the recognition of the qualification for this function the fulfillment of the following requirements is required:

  1. Have a university degree, degree, master's degree or doctorate, or equivalent, in Biology (animal), Medicine, Veterinary Medicine or any other discipline that incorporates studies on animal biology and physiology in its training program.
  2. Pass the training courses aimed at achieving the learning outcomes included in the modules corresponding to this function, according to Annex I of Order ECC / 566/2015, of 20 March.

Function of designated veterinarian (f)
In order to obtain the recognition of the qualification for this function the fulfillment of the following requirements is required:

  1. Have a university degree, degree, master's degree or doctorate, or equivalent that allows the practice of veterinary medicine.
  2. Pass the training courses aimed at achieving the learning outcomes included in the modules corresponding to this function, according to Annex I of Order ECC / 566/2015, of 20 March *.
     

* The passing of these courses may be excepted to those who document knowledge or experience in animal medicine used in experimentation and for other scientific or teaching purposes, equivalent to the learning outcomes included in the modules corresponding to this function.

Analogies for the training of staff using experimental animals

All researchers and experimenters accredited in accordance with Decree 214/1997, may apply for re-accreditation (recognition for training) in order to consider analogous their qualification as user personnel of experimental animals according to the following functions of the Article 15.2 of Royal Decree 53/2013:

a. Animal care function (former caregivers)
b. Animal euthanasia function (former experimenters)
c. Function of carrying out the procedures (former experimenters)
d. Project design function and procedures (former researchers)
e. Role of "in situ" supervision of animal welfare and care (former animal welfare advisers)
f. Function of designated veterinarian
