ICTA-UAB signs the Brussels Statement for Ocean Sustainability

The document was signed by ICTA-UAB researcher Andre Colonese who, together with Leopoldo Gerhardinger, also an ICTA-UAB researcher, participated in the Science-Society Meeting for IPOS, hosted by the CNRS at the Maison Irène et Frédéric Joliot-Curie, on 18-19 April.

The event aimed at advancing the collaborative building of the International Panel for Ocean Sustainability (IPOS). The workshop examined the role of scientific institutions in contributing to the UN Ocean Conference in 2025, and the broader context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.  To this end, the event took the form of an international meeting bridging science and policy and serve as a platform to express the variety of viewpoints needed to develop actionable, inclusive knowledge and well-informed decision-making for ocean sustainability. 

Andre Colonese and Leopoldo Gerhardinger gave the keynote seminar “Harnessing insights from civil society and academia”, which is a report from the Bridging Shades of Blue Workshop held last March at ICTA-UAB, which received support from Maeztu Programme of Excellence, ERC-TRADITION, and the SGRs MERS and EarlyFoods.  

 In addition, the event provided a platform to report on the Seascape assessment, which was commissioned by the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) of the European Commission. The assessment aimed to map existing science-policy organizations and processes that offer global ocean assessment information and scenarios in support of sustainable management of the ocean.
