A workshop explores new innovative paths in community composting of organic waste
A group of around twenty researchers participated in a workshop on sustainable organic waste management, organized as part of the Consumption Challenge within the María de Maeztu program. The event, coordinated by Dr. Laura Talens Peiró and Dr. Pietro Tonini, also focused on the valorization of these resources within the framework of the circular economy.
During the first session, the research resources of the Sostenipra group from ICTA-UAB were showcased, along with environmental biotechnology innovations from the group GICOM, as well as several noteworthy international projects, such as those led by the University of Stavanger. Dr. Gopalakrishnan Kumar led an interactive workshop on the valorization of coffee waste, exploring new opportunities to transform this material into value-added products.
The second session focused on community composting, adopting a practical and collaborative approach. Experts such as Dr. Marta García Prats and Dr. Ramon Plana presented analyses on the performance and emissions of local composting initiatives, while Dr. Pietro Tonini outlined the challenges and goals of a composting program for ICTA-UAB. The final roundtable offered a space to discuss the implementation of community composting solutions on the UAB campus and their integration with long-term sustainability projects.
The workshop not only fostered the exchange of knowledge but also promoted the development of collaborative initiatives in waste management and the circular economy. Additionally, it laid the foundation for future applied research actions, connecting researchers, technicians, and community representatives.
This event underscores ICTA-UAB’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the promotion of innovative solutions that benefit both society and the environment.
