Work placement opportunities in Shanghai for undergraduates

On January 15 a new programme was announced that will allow UAB undergraduates to carry out placements included on their syllabus with companies located in Shanghai during 2013-2014. This programme is aimed at students of Economics and Business Studies, Law and Engineering. The presentation took place at 13 h. in the presentation room of the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies.

The students will stay for six months, during which time they will gain useful knowledge for their careers, get to know a Shanghai-based company and familiarise themselves with the local language and culture. Their stay will begin with a two-week course that includes an introduction to Chinese culture and particularly important aspects of the language, and training on working in China (protocol, negotiations, political aspects, etc.)

Enrolment will take place at the faculties as from next March. No previous work experience or knowledge of Chinese is necessary to apply: it is necessary to be an undergraduate student at the School of Engineering or the Faculty of Law or Economics and Business Studies, and have a good enough level of English to work in an English-speaking environment.

The programme was presented by Glòria González, UAB vice-rector for Quality and Employability, and Alexis Roig, general manager of Global Taixue, a Chinese organisation that fosters cooperation between national and foreign businesses and universities, and which will have the task of monitoring and assisting the placement students in Shanghai.

A strategic area

Now the second world economic power and still growing, China is a very important potential destination for young people looking to further their careers. Its strong growth has led multinational firms to set up there, which means great work opportunities for university students. A stay in China would be a valuable professional and personal experience for young people starting their careers in a globalised context. Shanghai, moreover, is a privileged focal point for economic activity and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world.

Due to China's huge potential the UAB has come to consider it a strategic area for its international relations, being the first Spanish university to open an office, in 2008, to handle relations and exchanges with China's universities and scientific institutions.
