Primatologist Jane Goodall to visit UAB

27/04/2012
From 4 to 7 May, UAB will be host to a series of activities organised by the Jane Goodall Institutes, with the participation of Dr Goodall, world-famous British primatologist.
Dr Martí Boada, research of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) at UAB and member of the Science Committee of the Jane Goodall Institute in Spain, will receive Dr Goodall at the UAB Faculty of Science on Friday 4 May at 6 pm. Portuguese ecologist Paulo Magalhaes will also be attending the meetings.
The Jane Goodall Institute Global Meeting will start on Friday and last all weekend. The meeting will include over 40 directors of several scientific, conservation and education programmes, with representatives from Uganda, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Republic of the Congo, Senegal, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, United States, Canada, Argentina, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, France, Germany, etc.
The meeting will serve to analyse progress made in common programmes and to define new objectives and strategies, particularly in two large areas:
-“Africa Programs”: conservation programmes of tropical habitats for chimpanzees and other species, sustainability programmes with local communities; rescue, rehabilitation and reintroduction programmes for chimpanzees and other primates left orphan due to furtive hunting and the loss of land.
-“Roots&Shoots”: this educational programme in sustainability and solidarity was created by Dr Goodall in 1991 and is now being carried out in over 130 countries.
Coinciding with the Global Meeting, on Saturday 5 May from 10 am to 5:30 pm, UAB will be hosting the Primatology and Conservation Symposium. This meeting offers a unique opportunity for the public to discover the work in research, conservation, education and awareness-raising carried out by experts and scientists of the Jane Goodall Institutes of several African countries.
The day-long symposium will take place at the conference hall (Sala de graus) of the Faculty of Sciences and has been organised in collaboration with the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The event will include the participation of Jane Goodall and outstanding experts in primatology such as Federico Bogdanowicz, executive director of the Jane Goodall Institute in Spain, Liliana Pacheco, director of the project in Senegal, and Rebeca Atencia, director of the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center (Republic of the Congo), etc.
Conference by Jane Goodall
Jane Goodall will also be offering a conference to the general public on Monday 7 May at 6:30 pm at the conference hall of the Rectorate Building. The conference, entitled "Reasons for Hope" will focus on over fifty years of tireless work by Doctor Goodall on environmental conservation both at scientific and educational levels. Apart from explaining personal experiences, Dr Goodall will base her conference on transmitting her reasons for hope, by offering a set of arguments against pessimism and apathy. Other members of Jane Goodall Institutes in Africa will also participate. Simultaneous interpreting will be provided for attendants.
Doctor Jane Goodall is known for her revolutionary studies conducted in the jungles of Tanzania, among wild chimpanzees, from where the human species and the image humans had of Homo sapiens was redefined. Her scientific achievements in the field of conservation have won her several distinctions and prizes such as the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research in 2003, being appointed as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, and receiving honorary doctorates from over forty universities around the world.
Goodall travels 300 days a year to spread the word of peace around the world. Her next stop thus is Barcelona, where she be staying at UAB from 3 to 10 May to celebrate the Global Meeting of the Jane Goodall Institutes operating in several countries around the world. The Jane Goodall Institute in Spain (IJG, www.janegoodall.es) chose Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) as its meeting place and the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) has been working in close collaboration with IJG to make this exceptional visit to UAB by Dr Goodall possible.
With her profound views on science, Dr Goodall bases her talks on what she calls "Reasons for Hope", a set of arguments against pessimism which reaches the public like few others can thanks to Dr Goodall's charisma.
