The UAB Governing Council has approved the electoral calendar for the election of a new rector. Voting will take place on 29 and 30 October. In the event that no candidate reaches an absolute majority (above 50% of the weighted vote) in the first round, the two candidates with the highest percentage of weighted vote will compete in a second round on 6 and 7 November.

Eleccions a rector o rectora

The electoral calendar establishes, among other dates, that on 21 October the definitive candidacies will be proclaimed, and on the same day the electoral campaign will begin, ending on 30 October. The voting period will open at 10 a.m. on 29 October and will close at 4 p.m. on 30 October. In the event of a second round, the same schedules will be followed on 6 and 7 November. The final results will be announced by the General Electoral Board of the UAB on 5 November for the first round and, if necessary, on 12 November for the second round.

A secure e-voting system

The rector elections will be conducted entirely by electronic voting: the vote can be cast through any computer or mobile device with internet connection. The electronic voting takes place through a computer platform, common to all public universities in Catalonia, promoted by the ACUP and managed by the CSUC. This platform includes security systems that guarantee the anonymity of the votes cast. It also has the necessary tools so that voters can later make sure that their vote has been cast correctly; all this without being able to establish a connection between the voter and his or her vote.

First elections under the new LOSU organic law

These rector elections will be the first to be held in accordance with Organic Law 2/2023, of 22 March, of the University System (LOSU), which, in its article 51 and in the first transitory provision, states that candidates for the position of rector must be full-time permanent doctoral teaching and research personnel with three six-year research periods, three five-year teaching periods and four years of university management experience in a single-person position.

The rector shall be elected through direct election by weighted universal suffrage, by all members of the university community, and the term of office shall be a non-renewable and non-extendable six-year period.
