The UAB launches an innovative online course on the Pali language and literature
During the months of October and December, the UAB Faculty of Translation and Interpreting will offer the first edition of the Introductory Course to the Pali Language and Literature, an innovative course in the language used in the earliest Buddhist scriptures, such as the speeches given by Buddha and ancient treatise on ethics and meditation. The course will be offered online and can be validated for 4 ECTS credits.
The course combines the study of grammar and the reading of translations, as well as the approach to the original Buddhist texts by learning the Pali language. The aim of the course is to understand how prayers work in Pali and how to use reference works, both in print and online, whether they are grammar books, electronic texts or dictionaries.
Teaching will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 5 to 6 p.m., from 1 October to 19 December. The course will be taught by Aleix Ruiz, specialist in Pali and Sanskrit languages, and Gustavo Pita, lecturer of the Department of Translation and Interpreting and East Asian Studies.
The Buddhist canon in Pali represents one of the most complete sources of the Buddha's teachings. It comprises discourses and dialogues preserved since ancient times in Sri Lanka, Burma and Thailand, countries where Theravada Buddhism, the only Buddhist branch that maintains the teachings in a language that was possibly that of the historical Buddha, around the 5th century BC, is still studied and practiced.
