Several researchers from the Faculty of Biosciences and the CREAF have actively participated in the Science Carriage, an initiative led by the Autonomous University of Barcelona. This year’s focus is on the need to reduce the use of fossil fuels like oil, coal, and gas, while promoting the use of clean and renewable energy.

Faculty researchers have provided scientific guidance in the creation of the informational materials present in the carriage, including infographicsaudioguides, and podcasts accessible via QR codes. This train, part of the Barcelona-Vallès railway line, will circulate during the 2024-2025 academic year, bringing scientific knowledge to the general public.

Researchers from the Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology and the CREAF, such as Verónica ArcasAlba BadiaCristina MadridGemma MorellPablo NúñezAnna PetitLaura Pérez Sánchez, and Anselm Rodrigo, have been crucial in providing scientific advice and feature in several episodes of the podcast series titled "The Science Carriage Podcast". This series covers key topics such as the impact of fossil fuel consumption on biodiversity, human health, and climate change, as well as available energy alternatives.

Some of the topics covered by the Faculty researchers include:

  • Climate change and biodiversity (Cristina Madrid, Gemma Morell)
  • Challenges of the energy transition (Verónica Arcas, Anna Petit)
  • Climate justice (Cristina Madrid)
  • Regenerative agriculture (Raúl Velasco Fernández)
  • Responsible consumption (Gemma Morell)
  • Ecosystem impact (Anselm Rodrigo)

In addition, the Expert's Seat, one of the central activities of the project, will take place every Thursday from October to February, featuring Cristina Madrid and Gemma Morell, who will interact with passengers, answering questions and discussing their research topics.

The Science Carriage is a unique platform combining science and outreach, aiming to raise public awareness about urgent environmental challenges, with the support and involvement of several researchers from the Faculty of Biosciences.
