30 Years Ganàpies

In 1992-1993, a group of students from the Autonomous University of Barcelona decided to dive into the world of castells with an introductory workshop. This workshop was the seed of a shared passion that, two years later, led them to found the Colla Castellera Ganàpies, the first university-based casteller group. The name "Ganàpia," which means "child," symbolizes the freshness, enthusiasm, and unity that define the colla, without distinction of gender or age.
Since its foundation, Ganàpies has broken barriers, becoming a benchmark among university colles. At first, with its own organizational structure, they started building small castells, but over time they achieved unprecedented successes in the university context, such as the first all-female 4d7, a significant milestone that showcased the colla’s commitment to inclusion and equality.
One of the most emblematic moments was in 2007 when the colla successfully completed a 6-story castell outside of their home. This success marked a turning point in the history of Ganàpies, which continued to grow both technically and in terms of its members. Over time, the colla was also able to raise 7- and 8-story castells, consolidating itself as a group with great ambition and a constant spirit of self-improvement.
This exhibition not only seeks to recall the major technical achievements but also to celebrate the values of the colla: team spirit, mutual trust, and passion for tradition. The relationship between Ganàpies members has always been more than just a technical connection: it’s a big family, with shared moments like the early mornings before the diades or the evenings of camaraderie, which define the distinctive character of the group.
Another fundamental aspect of Ganàpies is its commitment to equality and creating a safe space for everyone. Since 2018, the colla has had a Gender Commission, dedicated to preventing gender-based violence and promoting training in gender and sexual diversity. This commission is just one example of the colla's constant efforts to build an inclusive and respectful space.
Through photographs, historical objects, and testimonies from those who have lived the history of Ganàpies, this exhibition aims to convey the essence of a group that, beyond the castells it has achieved, has built a community rooted in friendship, passion, and self-improvement. Visit this exhibition and discover how a university colla has managed to lift its dreams and turn them into reality, proving that dreams, when lived as a team, have no limits.
