The official master’s degree in Research in Clinical and Health Psychology is a programme offering university graduates the training needed in the most updated and rigorous research methods applied to social problems and mental health, especially among children and young people, as well as in the promotion of healthy habits and behaviours. However, these global and versatile skills cannot be fully developed if students do not learn also how to conduct applied research in a specific area. It is essential for students to specialise in a field with its own techniques and instruments, since there is a definitive need for acquiring a certain degree of specialisation in any scientific discipline in order to be research competitive.
Today, it is absolutely necessary to work on developing evidence-based psychology which allows choosing the prevention and intervention procedures proven to be the most efficient in practical cases. In this sense, the master's degree is addressed to students who after completing their bachelor's degree are interested in focusing on a career in research, as well as to health science professionals wanting to acquire the research and development skills required to improve their professional practice.
The multiple interrelations between Psychology and Health have formed the basis for the design of the specialised modules included in this programme: Clinical Psychology related to mental health and the intervention of psychological disorders, and Health Psychology related to the attention of the chronically ill and to the promotion of integral health. These two areas of knowledge show the development of psychology within the health field which, thanks to the knowledge acquired through individual factors implied in phychological alterations, have contributed to and enriched the field until reaching what is now the study of community health maintenance.
The area of research of Clinical and Health Psychology is relevant for the development of a person's health and wellbeing, be it physical, psychological or social. It is also a sector with a long tradition of scientific research. In this field, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has acquired a high degree of local and international experience and recognition, and can offer expert research teams perfectly capable of transmitting students their expertise in the most advanced psychological research methods. This tradition is reflected in the present Official Master's Degree in Research in Clinical and Health Psychology which will enable students to become better professionals, given that research is the basic premise needed to further the development of evidence-based psychology.
