Admission Official Master's Degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology

Access

Access to this master's degree is open to holders of an official bachelor's degree from a Spanish university or from another higher education institution within or outside the European Higher Education Area, provided this gives access to postgraduate studies in the country of issue.

Admission requirements

Students should preferably have previous studies in the area of anthropology but this Master’s degree is also open to applicants from the humanities and the social sciences. In cases where admitted students do not have sufficient previous studies in anthropology bridging courses will be offered over two weeks (40 classroom hours, 6 ECTS credits) in intensive session prepared especially for that purpose and taught by teaching staff from the master’s degree. These session will be programmed for the start of the course before the first semester classes begin (mid- to late September).

Accredited knowledge of English is required (level B2). Given that this course is also taught in Spanish and that English (the ‘lingua franca’ of the programme) knowledge of both languages will be considered as one of the selection criteria.

Selection criteria

Selection and preference criteria (to a maximum of 100 points): 1. Curriculum Vitae CV (max. 35 points). Value will be given to previous studies in anthropology and maximum points will be given to applicants with Bachelor’s degree or postgraduate studies in social and cultural anthropology. 2. Academic transcript (max. 20 points). 3. Accreditation of English language (B2, equivalent to First Certificate, FCE, or IELTS from 5.5-6.5 and higher, for non-native English speakers) and Spanish (DELE at B2 and higher, only for non-native Spanish speakers) (max. 15 points). 4. Letter of motivation addressed to the coordinator giving details of the suitability of the project to be carried out on the Master’s degree course (max. 25 points). 5. References from mentors from previous studies (max. 5 points). Prior to registration all candidates will have a personal interview with the coordinator of the Master’s degree.

Complementary training

New students at the UAB who have come from any other areas of study or discipline and who do not have sufficient previous studies in anthropology will be offered bridging courses (40 classroom hours, 6 ECTS credits) in intensive session prepared especially for that purpose and taught by teaching staff from the master’s degree. These session will be programmed for the start of the course before the first semester classes begin (mid- to late September). The content is that of the following course within the bachelor's degree in Social and Cultural Antropology:

  • 105.764 History of Anthropology I101.278 Basic Concepts. Anthropological Perspective on Difference and Inequality

This introductory course aims to provide a common base in anthropology and methodology from which to attain knowledge in the different specialist areas of the Master’s degree. As mentioned above, this course is taught by teaching staff from the master’s degree, who are also lecturers on the Bachelor’s degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology in the same subjects.
