Basic skills

  • Students must have and understand knowledge of an area of study built on the basis of general secondary education, and while it relies on some advanced textbooks it also includes some aspects coming from the forefront of its field of study.
  • Students can apply the knowledge to their own work or vocation in a professional manner and have the powers generally demonstrated by preparing and defending arguments and solving problems within their area of study.
  • Students have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data (normally within their study area) to issue judgments that include reflection on important issues of social, scientific or ethical.
  • Students must be capable of communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Students must develop the necessary learning skills in order to undertake further training with a high degree of autonomy.

Specific skills

  • Use written and spoken English correctly for academic and professional purposes related to the study of English linguistics, history, culture, and literature.
  • Understand and produce written and oral academic texts in English at an advanced proficient user level (C1).
  • Understand and produce written and oral academic texts in English at mastery level (C2).
  • Demonstrate grammatical knowledge of the Greek and Latin languages and its application to the analysis and comprehension of Greek and Latin texts.
  • Identify and interpret literary texts of different languages, analysing the generic, formal, thematic and cultural features according to concepts and methods of comparative literature and literary theory.
  • Recognize the most significant periods, traditions, trends, authors and works of Greek, Latin and English literatures in their historical and social context.
  • Identify the foundations of human language, the principles, methods and results of the structural analysis of languages.
  • Describe and analyse synchronically and comparatively the main phonetic, phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties of English, Greek and Latin, as well as their historical evolution.
  • Interpret written texts in Latin and Greek to learn about classical history and civilizations.
  • Interrelate linguistic and historical knowledge of the ancient world with knowledge of other fields of the humanities, mainly literature and archaeology.
  • Apply the methodology of analysis and knowledge of genres, metrics and stylistics to comment on literary texts and analyse the culture and history of English-speaking countries and the ancient world.
  • Apply the concepts, resources and methods acquired to the study of the English language in a global, multilingual, social context of language learning and teaching.
  • Develop arguments applicable to the fields of literature, culture and linguistics and evaluate their academic relevance.
  • Demonstrate skills for professional development in the fields of linguistic applications, teaching and literary and cultural management in English and in the field of classical languages.

Transversal skills

  • Demonstrate the ability to work autonomously and in teams with the aim of attaining the planned objectives in multicultural and interdisciplinary contexts.
  • Use digital tools and specific documentary sources for identifying and organisation information.
  • Apply ethical scientific principles in information processing.
  • Carry out effective written work and oral presentations adapted to the appropriate register in different languages.
