#UABrefuge: the Autonomous university shelters
Every three seconds, a person runs away from his home to save his life. ACNUR revealed this calculation to raise awareness on the scope and acceleration of the refugee crisis. The magnitude that represents forced displacement nowadays affects 65.6 millions of people in the whole world, half of them underage. One in 113 people of the world’s population has felt forced to abandon their home to escape from war, conflict, violence, persecution or violation of human rights.
This situation of forced displacement is not just a local problem limited to the wave of refugees and migrants arriving at European coasts. It is a structural problem in Europe that must tackle more than just the consequences – causes and responsibilities must be analyzed in order to articulate answers at a community level. Migration policy, border management and asylum systems are part of both the problem and the solution. The lack of shared responsibility arouses the risk of violating refugees’ rights and of criminalizing their situation.
In this global context marked by a continuous violation of the right of asylum, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona stands for action. The public university’s social engagement demands an active role in the defense of human rights. Since 2016 UAB has been promoting the Programa Refugi (“Refuge Programme”) aiming to contribute in the full integration of those who applied for international protection. The experience gained with this programme allowed to create work streams aimed at promoting the opportunity of refugees re-starting university degrees. On this matter, the university community’s participation is vital to develop shelter actions, assistance, awareness and citizens mobilization. As long as the refugee crisis remains, UAB will be a refuge because l’Autònoma shelters. For this reason, the next edition of Festa Major de la UAB will have as slogan: #UABrefugi: l’Autònoma acull.
Collective responsibility is essential; we count on your participation.
