The second edition of ExperimentAI, a citizen science project by the Computer Vision Centre (CVC) to experiment with artificial intelligence in public libraries, includes eight dissemination workshops aimed at the public in general which take place from May to September.

The sixth session, which focuses on AI in the health sector, is entitled “Avaluar estats cognitius amb IA. Una eina al camp de la salut” and will allow attendants to discover what happens inside a brain in real-time by translating the information with the help of an EEG cap, eye-tracking glasses and artificial intelligence. Other uses for AI will also be explored during the session, such as diagnosis, aviation and the treatment of neurological diseases. The session's themes will be connected and personalised health, and women creating AI. Those interested in attending the session must sign up here.

The project is launched by the CVC with the support of the Spanish Science and Technology Foundation (FECYT) and the Spanish government. It also includes the collaboration of the Barcelona Libraries Consortium and the Municipal Libraries Network of the Barcelona Provincial Council.

On 21 June, the conference "In Defence of Forests" will be given by Francisco Lloret, lecturer of Ecology at the UAB and researcher at the Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF). The lecture is part of the cycle "Universitat Opina" and the topic discussed is the protection of forests as one of the keys to the survival of ecosystems. The event is organised by the association AmicsUAB in collaboration with the Rubí Town Council and will take place at the Mestre Martí Tauler Library in Rubí at 7 p.m. This talk will be moderated by the director of the library, Adrià Martí. The seventh session, focusing on the environment, is entitled “Intel·ligència artificial en benefici del medi ambient” and will allow attendants to discover the different innovative proposals in artificial intelligence which can help create a more sustainable world. Attendants will be given a demonstration of a smart recycling system, the bases for analysis of multispectral images will be explored and other AI applications such as water management and the monitoring of fauna will be discovered. The themes of this 7th session will be sustainable industry and the environment. Those interested in attending the session must sign up here.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY and RESEARCH INTERESTS 

Benjamin Sovacool is a researcher and consultant on issues pertaining to global energy policy and politics, energy security, energy justice, climate change mitigation, and climate change adaptation. His research focuses on renewable energy and energy efficiency, the politics of large-scale energy infrastructure, designing public policy to improve energy security and access to electricity, the ethics of energy, and building adaptive capacity to the consequences of climate change. Currently, he is a “Distinguished Visiting Energy Professorship” at the Environmental Law Center at Vermont Law School.  

With much coverage of his work in the international news media, he is one of the most highly cited global researchers on issues bearing on controversies in energy and climate policy. 

 
TOPIC of the KEYNOTE 

What are the types of injustices associated with low-carbon transitions? Relatedly, in what ways do low-carbon transitions worsen social risks or vulnerabilities? Lastly, what policies might be deployed to make these transitions more just? The presentation answers these questions by first elaborating an “energy justice” framework consisting of four distinct dimensions—distributive justice (costs and benefits), procedural justice (due process), cosmopolitan justice (global externalities), and recognition justice (vulnerable groups). It then examines four European low-carbon transitions—nuclear power in France, smart meters in Great Britain, electric vehicles in Norway, and solar energy in Germany—through this critical justice lens. In doing so, it draws from original data collected from 64 semi-structured interviews with expert participants as well as five public focus groups and the monitoring of twelve internet forums. It documents 120 distinct energy injustices across these four transitions. It then explores two exceedingly vulnerable groups to European low-carbon transitions, those recycling electronic waste flows in Ghana, and those mining for cobalt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The presentation aims to show how when low-carbon transitions unfold, deeper injustices related to equity, distribution, and fairness invariably arise.

The last session, focusing on autonomous vehicles, is entitled “Digital Twins per la conducció del futur” and will allow attendants to discover the artificial intelligence behind self-driving vehicles, as well as the importance of the use of Digital Twins in the research conducted on autonomous driving. During the session, attendants will be able to experience driving using virtual reality and contribute to learning and development. They will also be able to discover the TDA project for autonomous driving on mountain roads. The issues to be touched upon on this session will be mobility and smart cities and women creating AI. The Institute of the History of Science (iHC) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) invites you to the inaugural conference of the 2023/24 academic year. The conference will be given by Professor Marco Armiero, researcher at ICREA and at the Institute of History of Science and is entitled "Science, power, and narrative justice: The Vajont Dam Disaster (Italy, 1963)". On 9 October 1963, two thousand people died when they were swallowed by a wave of water and mud triggered by a gigantic landslide that sank the Vajont basin. In 2008, UNESCO listed it among the five most serious anthropogenic environmental disasters, describing it as "a classic example of what happens when engineers and geologists are unable to understand the nature of the problem they are trying to address". The Vajont dam is still there, proving that high engineering alone is not enough to avoid a disaster.

Based on his recently published book, La Tragèdia del Vajont. Ecologia politica di un disastro (Einaudi 2023), Marco Armiero uses this case study to decipher the intersection of science, politics and collective memory in the creation of socio-ecological relations. Marco Armiero has worked on issues related to fascism and nature, migration and the environment, and environmental justice. In addition, he is the editor-in-chief of "Resistance: A Journal of Radical Environmental Humanities" (Nebraska UP, formerly Resilience).
