On 11 February UAB Department of Physics lecturer Daniel Campos will give a conference entitled "Simplicitat vs complexitat: cap a on avança la física?" [Simplicity vs. complexity: in which direction is physics advancing?]. This activity forms part of the 23rd Edition of Saturday Physics. The event will take place in the conference hall of the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Biosciences at 10 a.m.. Registration is free, but seating is limited.

In addition, researcher Sebastián Grinschpun from the Institute of High Energy Physics, and coordinator of the bachelor's degree in Physics, Pere Masjuan, will be offering an activity entitled "El teixit quàntic de l’univers peça a peça" [The Universe's Quantum Fabric, Piece by Piece] at 11:45 a.m.

Prof. Jasper Schipperijn, from University of Southern Denmark, will be giving a keynote on “Using GPS and accelerometers to evaluate the behavioral effect of changes to the built environment”. Our invited speaker will be available for informal meetings with ICTA-UAB researchers afterwards.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY and EXPERTISE

Jasper Schipperijn is an expert on GPS and accelerometer uses to track and understand human behavior in relation to the built environment. He has an MSc degree in Forest and Nature Management from Wageningen University, and a PhD degree in Greenspace Management from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. His research interests revolve around three main topics 1) playgrounds, 2) conducting multi-disciplinary intervention studies to create active living environments and 3) developing tools and methods that make it possible to measure active living and the environment it takes place in. Jasper has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles and numerous reports and popular publications.From 2020 to 2022, Jasper was President of the International Society for Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH). Since early 2022, he is heading a the World Playground Research Institute 
 

TOPIC of the KEYNOTE 

Human behaviour is influenced by the environment it happens in, and changes in the built environment often lead to changes in behaviour. If policy makers want to promote a certain behaviour, for example active transportation or children’s play, making changes to the built environment is one of the possibilities. Evaluating the effect of changes in the built environment is challenging for researchers and while using wearable devices such as GPS and accelerometers provides many conceptual and methodological benefits, it also provides a new set of challenges. The lecture will provide examples of projects that made changes in the built environment, evaluations of these projects, and highlight when and how the device-based measures can be useful.

As part of the series of conferences for secondary school students, Saturdays Mathematics, on 18 March lecturer Rosa Camps, from the UAB Department of Mathematics, will be giving a conference on an almost perfect machine, entitled “L’enigma, la màquina de xifrar quasi perfecte”, which will focus on the machine used by the Nazis in the Second World War. The conference will take place at the conference hall of the Faculty of Science and Biosciences. Registration to attend is now open, but seating is limited. An attendance diploma will be given to those who attend three or more conferences.

The webinar will present a research agenda for participatory urban planning that will be implemented in the New European Bauhaus Lighthouse Demonstrator project NEB-STAR. The aim of this is to assist vulnerable populations in Stavanger getting access to, and influence on, urban planning decisions. The starting point draws on the Utopian Future Workshop format (Critique, Utopia, Realisation), but particular attention  is paid to to the Realisation phase in the presentation. Project aim is to investigate how vulnerable and marginalized groups can gain political potency in urban planning processes, and there is a focus on the role of “experts” such as researchers, planners, artists, and architects in supporting these visions become reality.

All those interested can sign up until 21 March to participate in the UAB's second edition of Bioblitz, in continuation of the citizen science initiative organised to evaluate the biodiversity found on campus held last year.

The new edition will allow to gather more information on the environments and organisms found on the university campus. This unique opportunity allows participants to learn methodologies used in the study of nature which are often difficult to discover up close. Participants will be able to collaborate in creating a sample of different groups of plants and animals under the guidance of expert field biologists, who will show them how to study different types of living beings.

The project is funded by Fundació Autònoma Solidària (FAS) in collaboration with the UAB's Environmental Office.
