Antoni Reguant i Gumà
An industrial engineer from the School of Industrial Engineers of Barcelona and a graduate in Computer Science from the first cohort of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, he has donated a significant portion of his personal library to the UAB Science and Technology Library. This collection includes nearly all the mathematics textbooks for secondary school students published in Spain between 1938 and the 1970s. It also features textbooks from early technical courses, dating from the early 20th century to the 1960s, as well as French, Italian, and German books on advanced mathematical research from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Social Sciences Library
Joaquín Cerdá Ruiz-Funes (Murcia 1917-Barcelona, 2005)
He was a professor of Legal History at UAB. In 2012, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Sebastián Solé, Dr. Cerdá's children donated a large part of his extensive personal library to the Social Sciences Library. This donation primarily consisted of books and journals on general history, legal history, Roman law, and other social science subjects. These were mainly the books that shaped his development as a legal historian and as an intellectual with a broad and universal curiosity.
Lluís Fina i Sanglas (Barcelona, 1942-2000)
He was a professor in the Department of Applied Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies at UAB. His wife, Elena Blanchard, donated his extensive and valuable professional library to the Social Sciences Library. This bibliographic and statistical collection focuses on labour economics in general, as well as many of its specific aspects, including unemployment, flexibility and the labour market, employment, wage structure, and other related issues, both in Catalonia and Spain, and in Europe. Notably, the donation also included books in French, which complemented the existing collection in our library.
Carlota Solé i Puig (Barcelona, 1944)
Professor of Sociology at UAB, currently Professor Emeritus. Since 2009, she has been donating her personal library to the Social Sciences Library. Her contributions have been invaluable in expanding our collection on the subjects she has researched: sociological theory, racism and discrimination, gender, domestic work, and other significant social issues that reflect the society we live in today, thus creating a collection that greatly enriches our holdings.
Communication Library and General Newspaper Archives
Eugeni Giral i Quintana (Barcelona, 1941)
Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Communication Sciences at UAB, he has been the driving force behind the Documentation Centre on Communication (CEDOC), specialising in contemporary political documentation. Its exceptional documentary collection, which includes nearly 30,000 books, pamphlets, and posters, as well as more than 9,000 journal titles, has been amassed thanks to the contributions of Dr. Giral. He has acquired and donated much of the collection, in addition to carrying out tireless work to obtain new materials.
Daniel Jones (1951-2007)
He was a professor in the UAB Department of Journalism. Throughout his professional life, Daniel Jones built an important personal library specialising in communication. In 2014, his family, represented by Professor Isabel Fernández Alonso, made a significant donation to the Communication Library and General Newspaper Archives.
The collection includes 5,400 books and 358 journal titles, covering the field of communication in its broadest sense: the history of the book and printing, the relationship between the church and the media, the history of the media in Latin America, biographies of prominent communicators, communication groups, congresses, books on theory and criticism, cultural industry, and the structure and politics of communication, among other topics.
Joaquim Romaguera i Ramió (Barcelona, 1941-2006)
He was a historian, writer, film critic, researcher, and jazz enthusiast, as well as the creator of the ESCAC Media Library. In 2008, his film library was transferred to the Communication Library and General Newspaper Archives by his family. The Romaguera collection consists, first and foremost, of 3,000 books, many of which focus on the history of world cinema, with a particular emphasis on Spanish and Catalan cinema. Additionally, the collection covers related topics, such as monographs on directors, authors, cinematographic genres, and more.
The collection of magazines, made up of 206 titles, includes the best cinema publications, both international and national, as well as local ones. In addition, it is worth noting the collection of thematic dossiers, compiled by Joaquim Romaguera himself, which provide insight into the immense task of documentation gathering he undertook for his research.
Humanities Library
Jordi Castellanos i Vila (Tagamanent, 1946 – Barcelona, 2012)
He was a professor of Catalan Philology at the UAB. The UAB Humanities Library has received his library and his personal archives from the hands of his widow Roser Guardiola. In this library, a whole life dedicated to the study and teaching of Catalan literature is condensed.
Banco Sabadell Foundation
The Humanities Library has received the sponsorship of the Banco Sabadell Foundation, which has hosted the Jordi Castellanos Library, the Enric Lluch Library and the John Murra Library of the Catalan Institute of Anthropology, collections of great cultural value that are now partially within reach of the public. It has also supported the digitisation of art magazines incorporated into the UAB Digital Document Repository.
Societat del Gran Teatre del Liceu
The archive of this private institution comprises over 50,000 documents generated by the activities of the opera theatre between 1840 and 1981. The Humanities Library is overseeing the digitisation of this unique collection, developing a database, and integrating the materials into the UAB Digital Document Repository. This initiative is made possible thanks to the patronage of the Societat del Gran Teatre del Liceu.
Medical Library
Institute Ravetllat-Pla - Núria Pla i Monseny
With a degree in Medicine earned in 1940, Núria Pla i Monseny took charge, after the Spanish Civil War, of the laboratory established by her father, Dr Ramon Pla i Armengol, an eminent physiologist.
The Library and Archive of the Ravetllat-Pla Institute were donated to the Medical Library in 2007. This archive is an essential resource for tuberculosis researchers from the first half of the 20th century and holds immense significance for three key reasons: it is a unique collection within Spain; it addresses tuberculosis from multiple perspectives, including medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary science; and it contains numerous publications originating from South America.
This makes the library an indispensable source for understanding the origins and development of the Catalan medical, pharmaceutical, and veterinary industries, as well as their connections with Latin America.
Veterinary Library
Council of Veterinary Schools of Catalonia (CCVC)
The Council of Veterinary Schools of Catalonia has demonstrated strong support for the UAB Veterinary Library. Initially, it facilitated the transfer of the library collection from the College of Veterinarians of Barcelona. In 2010, the CCVC formalised an agreement with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the UAB, providing financial support to help sustain and enhance the library’s documentary resources. Its contributions have also been instrumental in promoting the preservation of Catalonia’s veterinary documentary heritage.
Xavier Fàbregas i Comadran (Barcelona, 1960)
A veterinarian by profession, Xavier Fàbregas worked for a period as an associate professor in the areas of Agriculture and Animal Production at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the UAB.
Mr Fàbregas has actively supported the Veterinary Library’s initiatives by donating his collection of over 5,000 images related to animal identification, meat, and veterinary inspection in slaughterhouses, spanning the period from 1988 to 2012. This donation enabled the creation of a digital version in the UAB university repository (DDD).
