The Let’s Go workshop was held via Zoom on 27 January 2021. The event closed two partnership programmes between the Fundació Autònoma Solidària, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the Faculty of Education Sciences,  GREIP, the Ministry of Education’s territorial delegation for Vallès Occidental, Badia del Vallès Town Council and the town’s two secondary schools.

The workshop began at 3.00 pm with a welcome by Jordi Prat, director of the FAS, and Jordi Barbé, UAB coordinator of relations with secondary education. They then handed over to Luci Nassbaum, founder of GREIP, who spoke about the challenges and benefits of teachers and researchers working together on projects to improve education programmes.

Next, Andy Morodo, a specialist on the Let’s Go programme and lecturer in the Faculty of Education, outlined the initial goals of the project and concluded that, broadly speaking, all expectations had been met and they were proud of the results achieved throughout the investigation. These words were echoed by Dolors Massats, principal investigator on the DATE programme, a project that was set up in association with Recercaixa to empower teachers and foster collaboration to make programmes more effective. Further information about the results of the project can be viewed in this report

After the presentations, the members of the panel were introduced, who were to talk about empowerment as the core focus of socio-educational action and language learning in a debate chaired by Anna Marbà, vice-dean for quality and innovation in the Faculty of Education Sciences.

The first speaker was Almudena Herrera, teacher at the  Can Periquet secondary school, who described the benefits of having a far stronger connection to the university than before. She was followed by the second speaker, Queralt Ciganda, headmistress of the Frederica Montseny secondary school, who highlighted how the practical work had included the creation of spaces to pause and think about the next steps to take.

Izan Jesús, a pupil at the  Frederica Montseny secondary school, then gave his opinion about his first-hand experiences with the programme. He said it had been highly refreshing for the pupils to take a break from taking notes and work on these projects. For the first time, he had sensed a real need to speak English, and as a result his language skills had improved considerably.

In contrast to the comments from teachers and education agents, Cèlia Pratginestós, programme specialist and member of GREIP, described how she has been using all the data and experiences extracted from the project to begin a doctoral thesis to continue the research.

Roser Viladot from the Badia del Vallès Education Service concluded the panel by saying that they had created a very interesting communication network with much interest in social change, and that pupils who had taken part in the programme will remember the experience.

The workshop ended with a few words from Tania Nadal of the UAB Social Council, Eva Menor, Mayor of Badia del Vallès and Jordi Prat, who thanked everyone who has made the project possible and also the students, who have been the real protagonists.
