The Ocean's Challenge groups are organizing a new seminar.
Seminar: "Arctic amplification of/and “global” warming"
Speaker: Graham Mortyn, oceanographer at ICTA-UAB
Date: Thursday, March 7th 2024
Time: 13h
Room: Z/032 and online https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81681944336?pwd=VlpBNnl6M1l3cUJaN3BROTI3N1I3Zz09
The talk will explore several aspects of the Arctic and climate change, especially the role of the region in influencing the “global” warming picture. We will explore several positive feedback issues, including the ice-albedo feedback, the methane outgassing feedback involving permafrost melting, and links to increasingly common Polar Vortex deviations. The latter are implicated in more wild climatic extremes (both cold and warm) in mid-latitudes of the N. hemisphere during winter, key since 87% of humans live in this hemisphere and primarily at mid-latitudes. We will also explore the role of geography (both global and regional), as well as Arctic “carbon storehouse” issues, all with much bearing on the rapidly changing climate picture.
