BIOCAL Workshop: "Biodiversity of planktonic calcifying organisms from biomineralization to global implications"
Date: 4-5 March 2024
Time: From 9 to 20h
Venue: Sala Montseny (Z/022 & Z/023) ICTA-UAB
The marine calcium carbonate (CaCO3) cycle is a key component of the global carbon cycle, intimately related to atmospheric CO2 and largely controlled by biogenic calcification and dissolution. In this workshop, we will focus on the biodiversity of major planktic calcifying organisms at the base of the food web (from primary producers to zooplankton), that have played a key role in marine CaCO3 production since the Mesozoic and established a pelagic carbonate buffer capable of influencing major atmospheric CO2 changes.
We will cover key knowledge gaps on marine biodiversity from biomineralization, to ecology and global impacts. We will consider different temporal scales of pelagic dynamics, to address marine ecosystem evolution and climate change.
