Food safety studies encompass the measures taken to guarantee maximum safety in the production and characteristics of food.
The food industry is extremely important in the European Union, Spain and Catalonia. According to the annual report on the Spanish food industry (2017-18), Food and Drink is the primary branch of the industrial sector, with 23.5% of the sector's turnover and 2.5% of GDP. In Catalonia, the sector has a turnover of nearly 28,000 Euros, representing 23.6% of the Spanish agri-food industry, 20.1% of industrial turnover and 17.7% of employment.
The importance of this industry means that businesses in the sector have to be competitive and ensure the quality and safety of their products and processes, employing professionals who are trained and qualified to meet internationally recognised standards in the agro-food sector, such as BRC (British Retail Consortium), IFS (International Food Standard) and FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification).
