UAB graduate classifies first in the statewide resident intern biologist exam

Five UAB graduates scored one of the top 10 marks in the recently held exam to be admitted to one of the specialised healthcare training positions offered by the Spanish Ministry for Health. One of the examinees, José Carlos Martín Alonso, received the top score in the statewide biology intern exam. A total of 27.649 applicants took the exam, aspiring to obtain one of the 11,900 intern positions offered in all specialisities.

Five UAB graduates scored one of the top 10 marks in the recently held exam to be admitted to one of the specialised healthcare training positions offered by the Spanish Ministry for Health. The exams took place on 25 January in various cities of Spain in the specialities of medicine, biology, psychology, nursing, pharmacy and chemistry.

Among the UAB graduates with the highest scores were José Carlos Martín Alonso, a graduate in Biomedical Sciences, who obtained the top mark in the resident intern biologist (BIR) exam, which offered a total of 63 intern positions. This was the first time José Carlos took the exam. Born in the Canary Islands, he moved to Barcelona to study Biomedical Sciences at the UAB. After graduating he enrolled in a master's degree and studies for the official exam, and is now awaiting to be assigned an intern position in one of Barcelona's hospitals.

In addition, in the same speciality exam, UAB graduate Maria Portaña came in 5th place, while other UAB graduates were also well positioned, with Ariadna Serrano scoring the 11th highest mark, and Paula García the 12th highest.

In the psychology exam (PIR), which offered 274 places, UAB graduates Mireia Sorolla Cortés came in 4th position, and Gal·la Palacín, in 7th position.

Ana Poza, a nursing graduate from the UAB, came in 7th position in the internal resident nurse (EIR) exam, a speciality offering 2,171 places.

In total, 27.649 candidates applied for 11,943 positions in the entrance exams for specialised healthcare training positions at the state level. A total of 99.83% of the candidates passed the exam. Of these 11,943 places, the most numerous were those for resident internal medical interns (MIR), with 9,011 intern positions, and nursing (EIR). In chemistry (QIR), 25 places were offered, while the speciality in Pharmacy (FIR) offered 325 places.
