"Language learning ‘in the wild’ in higher education" is the title of the inaugural speech offered by Emilee S. Moore, lecturer of undergraduate and postgraduate courses of the UAB Department of Language, Literature and Social Sciences Teaching and director of the Language Services of the International University of Catalonia (UIC). The UIC offers the Subject English for Specific Purposes in a variety of its undergraduate degrees. In 2011, Moore defended her doctoral thesis at the UAB. It was entitled "Plurilingual interaction at a Catalan university doing internationalisation: Context and learning" and was directed by Professor Luci Nussbaum.

Her speech will be based on her recompilation of a corpus of international experiences focused on the use of languages as a means by which to reach objectives set in the field of higher education. The analysis of data reveals that the learning and teaching of foreign languages take place in all types of contexts, from institutional to the very most casual ones. The analysis produces results which are different to those obtained in previous research studies conducted in similar contexts. Although language learning is a key objective in the internationalisation process of higher education, the potential of learning in "casual contexts" has not been fully explored.
