The UAB is sad to announce the death of professor Jaume Torras
Jaume Torras, professor in the Department of Economics and Economic History, passed away recently. The UAB sends its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and to all the people who knew and appreciated him, and wishes to express its sadness for having lost a member of its community.
Professor Jaume Torras played a very important role in the first decades of life of the UAB, and in particular, of the Faculty of Economics and Business, and of the Economic History Unit of the Department of Economics and Economic History. In addition to his academic and intellectual relevance, his role as an administrator also stands out and he was an excellent person who left an indelible mark on the Unit, the Department and the University during the years he formed part of it.
Torras received his PhD at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (1971). Extracts of his thesis were later published under the title Liberalisme i rebel-lia camperola, 1820-1823 (Ariel, 1976). At the UAB he was assistant professor (1970-1980) and professor (1982-1992). Later he developed his academic career in other universities.
He was visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institut für Geschichte, Göttingen (1986), the Department of Economic History of the London School of Economics and Political Science (1997), the Department of History of the University of Durham (2000) and was a Mellon Visiting Scholar in the Western Societies Program at Cornell University (1992). Previously, he was an translator for the UN in Geneva and New York.
He is still remembered fondly by many of his colleagues as a student or as a colleague.
