The Observatory commemorates International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia with a talk on the history of the LGBTI community at the UAB
On 16 May at 1 p.m. the Plaça Cívica will be the place for the UAB 17M commemoration, with a colloquium with guest speakers from JALG and IRIS LGBT+ and moderated by Eugeni Rodríguez i Giménez.
The UAB Observatory for Equality will be commemorating International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia on 16 May at 1 p.m. at the Plaça Cívica. This year a colloquium on the LGBTI movement at the UAB will be held and will include the participation of Eugeni Rodríguez, current director of the Observatory for LGBTI-phobia, Neus Miquel, former member of the UAB's JALG association, and Judit Silvestre and Carla Pascual, members of the IRIS LGBT+ group. The event, organised jointly by the UAB's LGBTI community and the IRIS LGBT+, aims to fulfil the need of recovering the legacy of the LGBTI community at university.
The commemoration will consist in a colloquium with guest speakers, in which the first actions of the movement will be discussed, as well as a series of experiences and historical struggles. The debate will be presided by Secretary General Esther Zapater, and moderated by the director and founder of the Observatory for LGBTI-phobia Eugeni Rodríguez i Giménez.
With a long history of fighting for LGBTI rights in our country, Rodríguez is an activitst, member and spokesperson of the Gay Liberation Front of Catalonia (Front d'Alliberament Gai de Catalunya, FAGC). In 1985 he and other young people founded the Youth for Gay Liberation (JALG) under the FAGC, an association formed by young people committed to fighting for the rights of this community. Six years later, he participated in the organisation of a conference in Barcelona held by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), the most important in defending the rights of the LGBTI community. Finally, he also participated in the creation of the Catalan law 11/2014, of 10 October, in guaranteeing the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders and intersexuals and erradicating homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia.
Another member of the colloquium will be Neus Miquel Tàpies, former member of the (JALG) while she was a student of veterinary medicine at the UAB. Judit Silvestre and Carla Pascual will also provide their experiences as members of the IRIS LGBT+ group.
