The "Cinema Essencial" series kicks off, a new initiative to rediscover cinema's classics and post-classics
This series will take place from Monday 28 October to Monday 9 December at the UAB Cinema Hall, at 12:00 noon. A compilation of the most celebrated films in the history of cinema will be screened, which also shape the evolutionary trajectory of the classical system of representation. City Lights by Chaplin, Germany Year Zero by Rossellini, and Les Quatre Cents Coups by Truffaut are among the films to be enjoyed at UAB in the upcoming weeks.
This new film cycle is an anthology of the essential films needed to understand the evolutionary line of the classical system of representation, a must-see for any film enthusiast.
This activity, organised by the Department of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising, with the support of the Unitat de Cultura en Viu, will feature an introductory presentation at the beginning of each film screening, led by Ludovico Longhi, lecturer from the Faculty of Communication Studies at the UAB and the driving force behind this film series. It is a unique opportunity to revisit, for the most film-savvy, or discover, for those newer to cinema, a selection of films that will offer them a fresh perspective on the art of filmmaking.
The series will begin on Monday 28 October with City Lights, the legendary Chaplin film—a romantic dramedy that introduces sound for the first time in his works. On Monday 4 November the screening will be The Grapes of Wrath, a film that highlights the North American epics of John Ford. Later, on 18 November the audience will enjoy Germany Year Zero, a film in which Rossellini's neorealism portrays the consequences of totalitarian regimes in a post-war Berlin.
The penultimate film, scheduled for 2 December will take viewers to Paris in the late 1950s. Les Quatre Cents Coups, Truffaut's directorial debut and an Oscar-nominated film, will represent coming-of-age cinema in this series.
To wrap up the series, on 9 December there will be a leap to the present day with C’è ancora domani, directed by and starring Paola Cortellesi. This film, considered one of the best of 2023, will close the "Cinema Essencial" series with a story addressing contemporary issues such as gender-based violence and women's rights.
