Scott Thornbury asks if language is a countable noun

The UAB Language Service will hold an event to celebrate the official opening of academic year 2013-2014, on 11 October at 12 p.m., in the conference hall of the Rectorat building. Scott Thornbury, a professor of English Language Studies at the New School for Public Engagement in New York, will give the Inaugural Lecture, entitled "Is Language a Countable Noun?". The event will be led by the director of the Language Service, Marta Estella, and there will be contributions from  the Vice-Rector for Institutional Relations and Environment and the Administrator, Joan Melcion.

Professor Thornbury has over thirty years' experience in English language teaching and teacher training in New Zealand, Egypt, the UK and Spain, where he currently lives. At the New School for Public Engagement he teaches an online programme for students who do not have English as their first language.

He has authored a large number of articles and other works on English teaching. Among other awards, he has twice received the British Council ELTON Innovations Award and has also twice been finalist for the English Union Prize. He is also editor of the Cambridge Handbooks for Teachers series.

In addition, Professor Thornbury is academic director of the International Teacher Development Institute (iTDi), authors a blog entitled "An A-Z of ELT" on language and teaching, and was a co-founder of ELT Dogme, a group of teachers, teacher trainers and writers looking for new alternatives to existing models for English teaching.
