Núria Planas

The SEIEM was created in 1996 and brings together the majority of researchers in the area of mathematics education in Spain. It is one of the entities associated with the Spanish Committee of Mathematics (CEMat), an organisation adhered to the International Mathematical Union (IMU). This appointment is a recognition of the quality of research in mathematics education carried out at the UAB, specifically in the Research Group on Educational Practice and Mathematical Activity (GIPEAM), and other research teams.

In addition to the GIPEAM, Planas coordinates the Unit of Teaching of Mathematics and is secretary of the Department of Teaching of Mathematics and Experimental Sciences at the UAB. She is also a member of the executive committee of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) and of the advisory committee of the Spanish Government's Mathematical Competences Improvement Plan.

Núria Planas' research has contributed to understanding language use in the teaching and learning of school mathematics in linguistically diverse environments. She received the ICREA Academia Award 2013, was awarded with an Extraordinary Professorship at the University of South Africa between 2013 and 2020, and is Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Education at the University of Oxford since 2022.
