Inauguration of the new Campus Universitari Mar

Attending the event were Ana Ripoll, Rector of UAB; Josep Joan Moreso, Rector of UPF; Joan Majó, Commissioner for Universities and Research; and Carles Martí, first Lieutenant-Mayor of Barcelona and President of IMAS, the Municipal Institute for Health Care.

Coinciding with the beginning of the 2009/10 academic year the end of the first refurbishing stage of the building "Doctor Aiguader" has made it possible to house the new Campus Universitari Mar, which includes three teaching units devoted to health care: the Faculty of Medicine of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, which offers the licentiate in Medicine; the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences of Pompeu Fabra University, which offers the degree in Human Biology; and the School of Nursing of Hospital del Mar (EUIM), which is a member centre of IMAS and offers the degree in Nursing. UAB and UPF also will be offering the joint degree in Medicine at the new campus.

A total of 4,500 sp mts of the Doctor Aiguader building will be used by the three institutions which include three laboratories, 18 lecture rooms, four computer rooms and a study hall. Each institutions will also have its own administration and management offices as well as offices for professors and staff. The building will house some 1,200 people including students, research and teaching staff, and administration and services staff.

The new Campus Universitari Mar library will be open to both professors and students and health care personnel of Hospital del Mar. It is located on the ground floor of the building and contains 10.500 volumes and can seat up to 125 people. In addition to other facilities, users dispose of different areas where they can meet and work in groups, work on computers, etc.
