Four candidates aspire to become UAB Rector

The General Elections Committee, which on 14 March convoked the 2012 elections for rector, announces four candidates for the upcoming elections for rector of the university, to be held on 24 May.

The UAB General Elections Committee announced the provisional list (the final list will be announced 30 April) of candidates for Rector of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona:


-Margarita Arboix Arzó, professor of Pharmacology (Department of Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Toxicology).

-Joaquim Coll Daroca, professor of Medicine (Department of Medicine).

-Ferran Sancho Pifarré, professor of Economic Analysis (Department of Economics and Economic History).

-Pere Solà Gussinyer, professor of Theory and History of Education (Department of Systematic and Social Teaching Methods).

The electoral campaign will take place between 30 April and 23 May. The following day, 24 May, elections for the new rector of UAB will be held. If none of the candidates wins by majority, elections will be held again on 31 May.

 

The rector of the university is chosen by the university community and elections are held by universal suffrage and are free and secret. Rectors are elected for a four-year term and may be re-elected once. The university community is divided electorally into four sectors: Sector A, tenure-track academic staff; Sector B, all other academic and research staff; Sector C, undergraduate and postgraduate students; and Sector D, administration and services staff.

Votes cast by each sector are weighted as follows: Sector A - 51 % (in accordance with the Universities Act); Sector B with 9%; Sector C with 30%; and Sector D with 10%.
