Antoni Rossell, lecturer of the Department of French and Romance Languages, recently received the Enderrock 2018 Award. The double CD Galicia y las Cantigas de Santa María (Columna Música) was considered by the critics to be the best classical music album of 2017. Antoni Rossell and his band C. Courtly Music Consort perform accompanied by traditional musicians to offer a live interpretation of the works of Alfonso X of Castile.
The pieces of this double CD aim to reproduce the middle ages through its characteristic sounds, such as the sound of chapels and storms. It also transmits the images of shipwrecks, which were very common at that time, with a men's choir singing to the sea and a women's choir singing to the land. The musical pieces include fragments of texts read by poets and professors working with Galician-Portuguese literature.
Antoni Rossell is lecturer in Romance Studies at the UAB and director of the Occitan Archives at the UAB Institute of Medieval Studies. He plays medieval music and directs the band C. Courtly Music Consort, for which he has created several compositions. He has also published numerous books and articles on the poetry and music of the Middle Ages. He is also director of the National Library of Catalonia's e-Books“Escrits i memòria”.
