UAB honorary doctor Janice Monk passes away

Janice Monk, promoter of Gender Geography in the world who was awarded an honorary doctorate by the UAB in 2013, at the proposal of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, has passed away. The UAB wishes to extend its deepest condolences to her family and friends and to all those who knew and appreciated her, and expresses its heartfelt sorrow for her passing.

Janice Monk was awarded an honorary doctorate by the UAB in recognition of her decisive contribution to the development of gender geography and social and cultural geography on an international scale and her valuable contributions to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

The Department of Geography dedicates the following words to her:

Dr Janice Monk has passed away.

Teacher, friend, companion and unconditional supporter of the Research Group on Geography and Gender of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since its inception.

Promoter of Gender Geography in the world and mentor of several generations of Catalan and worldwide geographers. She became an honorary doctor of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2013 in recognition of her contribution to the development of geography and gender and social and cultural geography internationally, as well as her close and valuable collaboration with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

Since the 1980s, Dr Monk had a relationship of scientific and personal exchange with the Research Group on Geography and Gender through its director, Dr Maria Dolors Garcia Ramon, and other members. Dr Garcia Ramon gave the keynote speech introducing Dr Monk at the investiture ceremony held at the Faculty of Arts & Humanities on 16 October 2013.
