Teresa San Román

Professor San Román directed the Research Group on Interculturality and Marginalisation (GRIM) and specialised in the study of the Gypsy people. She also did research on old age and on the Senegambian community. She worked on an ethical and professional intervention focused on an intercultural proposal to face situations of exclusion and social risk. She was one of the first academics to propose the distinction between marginalisation and culture, as well as the need for differentiated interventions based on values and social cohesion.

Her work on ethnic minorities was recognised with several awards: R. Doucastella Award for Research in Social Sciences, Hidalgo Award for the professional trajectory in the fight against racism, Medal of the Civil Order for Solidarity from the Spanish Ministry for Labour and Social Economy, 8 de Abril Award from the Institute of Gypsy Culture, Vicens Vives Award from the Government of Catalonia, Àlex Seglers Memorial Award - given by the UAB and the City Council of Sabadell - and Gold Medal for Scientific Merit from the City Council of Barcelona. She was also decorated as an honorary member of the Federation of Gypsy Associations of Catalonia.
