The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, in association with Cerdanyola Local Council, held the eleventh edition of the UAB Charity Fun Run to raise money for La Marató on TV3, which this year was in support of cardiovascular health.
Around 100 people helped out with the organisation and logistics and, of these, more than 50 were volunteers. As in previous editions, the FAS managed the volunteers who were in charge of distributing numbers, refreshments and making sure everything went smoothly during the run. Physiotherapy students were also on hand to give massages to the runners. Of these 52 volunteers, 27 were UAB students, 10 were UAB admin and service staff, 3 were UB students, 2 were alumni and 10 had no connection with the university.
Some of these volunteers come back for race after race because they find it so enriching to participate in a charity sports event and provide such an essential service to the organisation.
Day of solidarity and participation
This edition had more than 1,400 entrants in the four race categories, the 11.7 km run, the 6 km run and walk, the children's 500 m race and the 500 m race for people with reduced mobility. The charity day was attended by institutional representatives of the organisers, as well as the rectors of the UAB and the UB, Javier Lafuente and Joan Guàrdia, respectively, together with the mayor of Cerdanyola del Vallès, Carlos Cordón, and the head of Applus. There was also the novelty of the UAB "xaranga" providing music at the start of the different races, which added a lively, festive touch to the whole morning.
