At only 14, Antoine Doinel is forced not only to witness the marital disputes of his parents, but also deal with the demands of a strict teacher. One day, scared because he did not finish a task his teacher ordered him to do as punishment, he decides to skip class with his friend René. He unexpectedly sees his mother with another man; and the guilt and fear he feels leads him to tell a series of lies which slowly start to eat at his soul.
