BRIEF BIOGRAPHY and EXPERTISE

Chelsey Geralda Armstrong is a historical ecologist and archaeologist specializing in ancient human land-use and landscape archaeology.She is Assistant Professor and Director of the Historical-Ecological Research Lab in Indigenous Studies at Simon Fraser University (Canada). She is conducting historical-ecological research in northern Ts'msyen and Gitxsan territories in so-called British Columbia with a focus on traditional resource and environmental management.
 
TOPIC of the KEYNOTE

Land-use scientists increasingly recognize that ecological and anthropogenic forces have long interacted in complex ways, forming many of the landscapes we observe today. For example, Indigenous peoples’ legacies of plant cultivation and management can have profound effects on contemporary forest structure and species composition long after such practices have ceased. Beyond the scientific bearing such research provides, documenting Indigenous land-use has become increasingly important as a legal benchmark for asserting Indigenous title and sovereignty over unceded territories. This presentation combines various lines of evidence from ecological and archaeological sources, allowing us to document Indigenous orcharding and forest management throughout British Columbia (Canada), while challenging still-held narratives about people and their contested homelands. Historical-ecological studies may be a pathway for challenging colonial super structures that continue to underpin land-use in Canada. This collaborative research reflects on Indigenous peoples’ land-use as having positive effects on the lived landscapes and supports descendant communities seeking to re-integrate land-based foodways and livelihoods in unprecedented times.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY and RESEARCH INTERESTS

Enrica De Cian is Professor in Environmental Economics at Ca’ Foscari University  (Italy) and ERC Starting Grant grantee with the project ENERGYA – Energy use for Adaptation (www.energy-a.eu). She coordinates Ca’ Foscari’s PhDin Science and Management of Climate Change.  She is deputy coordinator of the research unit on Economic analysis of Climate Impacts and Policy at Fondazione Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC) in Italy. 

She has collaborated with several research organizations in Europe (CEPS, ZEW) and in the US (JP at MIT, Boston University). In 2012, she was a visiting researcher at BU funded by the European Commission Global Marie Curie Research Fellowship. She has published in the fields of climate change economics, integrated assessment modelling, and energy economics.
 

TOPIC of the KEYNOTE

Climate change impacts are widespread, and billions of people are exposed to the risk of extreme heat events. As never before, the Sixth Assessment Report of the IPCC addresses the challenges of climate change in a world already undergoing some of the most rapid and significant societal and environmental changes in decades. Adaptation to climate change is one of the biggest challenges, especially if considering that the solution space is constrained by cultural, institutional, socioeconomic conditions, as well as by the risk of maladaptation.  In this talk I will present new results from the ERC-funded research project – ENERGYA – that has examined a leading example of a potentially dangerous form of adaptation, the adoption and utilization of air-conditioning. The presentation will go through three papers covering developed and developing countries.

 BRIEF BIOGRAPHY and EXPERTISE 

Sara Moreno Colom es Doctora en Sociología por la UAB. Actualmente, es Profesora del Departamento de Sociología de la UAB e investigadora del Centro de Estudios Sociológicos sobre la Vida Cotidiana y el Trabajo – QUIT y del Instituto de Estudios del Trabajo. Ha sido Vicedecana de Profesionalización (2009-2015) y Vicedecana de Relaciones Institucionales (2015-2016) en la Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y de Sociología de la UAB, y Vicerectora de Alumnado y Ocupabilidad de la UAB (2016-2020).  

Sus líneas de investigación y transferencia se enmarcan en el campo de la sociología del trabajo, la sociología del tiempo y la sociología del género. Concretamente, se ha especializado en el análisis del trabajo, el tiempo y la vida cotidiana, con especial atención a las desigualdades sociales, el bienestar y las políticas públicas. Como investigadora ha participado de manera ininterrumpida en proyectos de investigación competitiva y ha dirigido y participado en contratos de investigación y transferencia en colaboración con instituciones públicas y privadas destacadas en el ámbito de las ciencias sociales, como el IDESCAT, el Instituto de las Mujeres, el Instituto de Estudios Regionales y Metropolitanos de Barcelona, la Fundación La Caixa o la Fundación Jaume Bofill, entre otros. 

 TOPIC of the KEYNOTE 

El seminario se interroga por el impacto de género de algunas de las trasformaciones que acarrea la llamada cuarta revolución industrial en el trabajo doméstico. En concreto, se fija en la dimensión simbólica del uso y la distribución del tiempo que se dedica a las tareas relacionadas con la compra y preparación de los alimentos. La hipótesis de partida sustenta que, más allá de la innovación tecnológica, la disminución del tiempo dedicado a las tareas culinarias que evidencian las estadísticas responde al cambio de hábitos cotidianos y modelo de consumo. A modo de exploración, se propone una estrategia metodológica cualitativa centrada en la experiencia cotidiana y el sentido atribuido a las tareas domésticas según el género, el ciclo vital y la clase social. Como conclusión, se apunta que en el trasfondo de la menor dedicación de tiempo a la cocina emergen nuevos hábitos caracterizados por dedicar más tiempo a la compra de alimentos y menos a su preparación. En cualquier caso, parece que dichos hábitos siguen representando más trabajo para las mujeres según sus condiciones estructurales.

BRIEF BIOGRAPHY and EXPERTISE 
Aaron Hipp, PhD, is a Professor of Community Health and Sustainability in the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management (College of Natural Resources), and Associate Director of Social and Behavioral Science Applications in the Center for Geospatial Analytics at NC State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. His research focuses on equitable access and spaces to be active with specific attention on natural environments and measurement development. Dr. Hipp currently instructs courses on nature and wellness and evidence-based decision-making. He serves on the Steering Committee for the National Physical Activity Plan and is an Interdisciplinary Research Leader with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. 

TOPIC of the KEYNOTE 

In this keynote, Dr. Hipp will discuss his interdisciplinary research path and current work related to defining and measuring environment; tthe process of research, evaluation, and decision-making in community science; and the use of technology in research and with communities. This conversation will be guided by recent work with a national playspace non-profit organization and focus on access and equity to spaces for communities to thrive.

Until 30 June the UAB Science and Technology Library (BCT) will display an exhibition entitled "¡Bienvenido, Mr. Palomares! : radiografías fenomenológicas y filogenéticas de la nuclearización española: crónica sobre el blanqueamiento del fetichismo nuclear", created by student Adrián Camarós as part of his work placement module of the official master's degree in History of Science: Science, History and Society, under the guidance of Montserrat Monge (BCT) and Jaume Sastre-Juan (Institute of History of Science, IHC).

The academic work and exhibition highlights the Jordi Bigues - Fons Palomares Archives, available online through the UAB's DDD deposit. This archive was leased by Jordi Bigues himself in 2016. The journalist and activist coordinated as member of the board of directors of Greenpeace Spain the campaign in favour of the neighbours of the town of Palomares, Almeria, right before the indemnity period for the victims of the nuclear accident in 1966 was about to expire.

The second edition of ExperimentAI, the citizen science project of the Computer Vision Centre (CVC) to experiment with artificial intelligence in public libraries offers 8 informative sessions, aimed at a general public, and will take place between May and September.

The third session, entitled "Do machines dream with visual illusions?" will deal with human visual perception using visual illusions, allowing participants to see that "reality" is a model created by the human brain. Moreover, the session will use artificial neural networks and will also show weaknesses of modern AI: adversarial attacks. The thematic axes of the session are mobility and smart cities, and women doing AI. Registration is required to access the session.

The project is promoted by the CVC with the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and the Spanish government. It also has the collaboration of the Library Consortium of Barcelona and the Municipal Libraries Network of the Barcelona Provincial Council.
