Wednesday: To mark the celebration of the International Day of Light on 16 May, the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of Biosciences will hold a flash fiction contest opened to everybody working at the UAB. Deadline for submissions is Sunday 28 April.

Wednesday: As a part of the 5th Conference on Research by the BABVE (Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology), to be held on Tuesday 4 June, the photo exhibition of the photography contest EXPONATURA 2019 can be seen thanks to the support of the Faculty of Bioscience, the Vice-rectorate for Institutional Relations and Culture of the UAB and the collaboration of Altaïr, Oryx, Olimarc and Abacus. 

The contest is open to all members of the UAB community, who can present a maximum of two digital photographies on the topic Biodiversity. The deadline is 26 May 2019.

Wednesday: Oceanographer and climate scientist Erik van Sebille will be visiting the UAB campus on Thursday 3 October to offer a conference at the ICTA-UAB in which he will speak on the contanimation of oceans caused by plastics, and their distribution and accumulation around the world.

Leading world expert in the problems caused by plastic, Erik van Sebille will offer a conference at 12 noon at the ICTA-UAB building. His conference is entitled "Where's all the plastic in our oceans? Simulating ocean transport to identify sources, fate and risks of marine waste” and focuses on the need to understand how this debris moves around the ocean before being able to elaborate plans and strategies to help mitigate this global problem.

Wednesday: Silvia de Bianchi, Ramón y Cajal researcher at the UAB Department of Philosophy, will participate in the seventh edition of the "Disputa de Barcelona", alongside Maciej Lewenstein, ICREA research lecturer at the Institute for Photonic Sciences. The debate, which is entitled “A New Humanism for the 21st Century? Specialisation vs. Generalisation”, will be coordinated by Alexander Fidora, ICREA research lecturer at the UAB Department of Antiquity and Medieval Studies.

De Bianchi and Lewenstein will debate on the present and future of knowledge, through key notions such as specialisation, generalisation, interdisciplinarity, the humanities, science and development, and personal fulfilment.

The event is open to the general public and will be in English.

Notes on the book "Forces of Reproduction"(2020)
The concept of Anthropocene has been incorporated within a hegemonic narrative that represents 'Man' as the dominant geological force of our epoch, emphasizing the destruction and salvation power of industrial technologies. This Element develops a counter-hegemonic narrative based on the perspective of earthcare labour – or the 'forces of reproduction'. It brings to the fore the historical agency of reproductive and subsistence workers as those subjects that, through both daily practices and organized political action, take care of the biophysical conditions for human reproduction, thus keeping the world alive. Adopting a narrative justice approach, and placing feminist political ecology right at the core of its critique of the Anthropocene storyline, this Element offers a novel and timely contribution to the environmental humanities.

Notes on the Author
Stefania Barca (Naples 1968) is the current "Zennström visiting professor" in Climate Change Leadership at the University of Uppsala (SE); she has been recently awarded a "Beatriz Galindo" senior position as Distinguished Researcher at the University of Santiago de Compostela (ES), where she will move in september 2021. Previously, she has worked as senior researcher at the Center for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra (CES/UC), where she has lectured and coordinated research in Environmental History and Political Ecology. Her 2010 book monograph Enclosing Water. Nature and Political Economy in a Mediterranean Valley (Cambridge, UK: White Horse Press ), was awarded the Turku Book Prize in 2011. Her research interests cover the environmental impact of industry in the Anthropocene, the relationship between labor and the environment, environmental justice, degrowth and commoning.
