María Eugenia Larreina, a TransMedia FI fellow researching video game accessibility for blind people, has won the Best Student Paper Award at the ICEC 2023 congress.

Best Student Paper Award

He has obtained the prize thanks to his project entitled: “Audiodescripció dels videojocs: Death of Internet com a estudi pilot”.

The project is about audio description (AD), an accessible service that narrates visuals for visually impaired people, which is starting to be implemented in video game trailers and cinematic scenes. However, its potential to improve real-time in-game accessibility has yet to be fully explored.

As part of their master's final project, a team of game design, development and art students from France's Cnam-Enjmin University took up the challenge and created Death of Internet, a PC video game with AD in real time, created by María Eugenia Larreina. The article presents the AD implementation process, from writing the script to its integration with other accessibility features such as text-to-speech and point-of-interest navigation in The other. Despite the need for user testing, this pilot study highlights the transformative possibilities of AD for gamers, as well as its potential impact on the industry and the training of future professionals.
