Gonzalo Seco, professor in the Department of Telecommunications and Systems Engineering, has been elevated to the rank of fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) of the United States. This distinction is reserved for distinguished members of the Institute, whose achievements in any of their fields of interest are considered deserving of this prestigious elevation of degree.

Professor Seco has been elected at the proposal of the Signal Processing Society of the IEEE. Professor Seco has been elevated to fellow for his contributions to signal processing for satellite navigation systems and 5G positioning systems.

With more than 400,000 members, the IEEE is the world's largest association of technical professionals dedicated to the advancement of technology for the benefit of humanity. The distinction of being a Fellow is a very relevant and prestigious recognition in the international field of electrical and electronic engineering. It is awarded by the Institute's Board of Directors to experts with an outstanding record of achievement in any of the IEEE's fields of interest. The total number of selectees in any one year may not exceed 0.1% of the total voting membership. In Spain there are only 57 IEEE fellows, 3 of which at the UAB, and each year only one number is recognized, usually not more than five for all the societies that make up the IEEE. This year only three distinctions were awarded to Spanish researchers.

Members elevated to the category of IEEE Fellow are recognized at the IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP), which is held from June 4 to 10 in Greece.

Gonzalo Seco, professor in the Department of Telecommunications and Systems Engineering at the UAB, has made numerous contributions to the design of satellite navigation systems, known as GNSS in general, among which are the GPS and Galileo systems, as well as in positioning with 5G systems thanks to taking advantage of the wide bandwidth, new frequencies, and large arrays that these systems use. He is the inventor of three patents in the field of GNSS and has contributed to the creation of a spin-off company focused on the design of low-power positioning solutions suitable for Internet of Things devices and with cloud processing .

In his career, Gonzalo Seco has been a permanent member of the technical staff of the European Space Agency in the Netherlands, a visiting researcher at Brigham Young University (Utah), a "Chazen Student" at Columbia (New York) and recognized with Fulbright grants on three occasions, serving as visiting professor at the University of California at Irvine. President of the Spanish Chapter of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society, he received an award for the best journal article by the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2021 and the ICREA Academy recognition in the years 2015 and 2019.
