María Carmen García- Nieto: historiadora social, humanista i feminista
María Carmen García-Nieto Paris (1929-1997), participated in the renovation of the historiography of Spain towards a social history, giving prominence to those people who had not had their place in the history of our country. The investigations of this Catalan historian were aimed at rescuing the contribution and work of women during the Second Republic, the Civil War and the Franco regime, identifying the values and female political activism.
Was the founder of Colectivo 36, from which, based on oral sources, she gave visibility to the women of the Civil War. García-Nieto gave immigrant women a voice in her book “La palabra de las Mujeres” based on her experience at the School for Adults in the working-class neighborhood of Los Palomares in Madrid.
Her life and professional career ended at the Fundación Utopía in Cornellá, interviewing working women from Baix Llobregat.
The objective is to assess the contribution of the historian to feminism in our country through the creation of the Institute for Women's Research at the UCM, where the research and study of feminism in Spain was promoted.
