The UAB has organized an event to commemorate the thirty years of the UAB Research Ethics Committee (CERec) - formerly the Ethics Committee on Animal and Human Experimentation (CEEAH) - with the participation of prominent specialist speakers in topics such as big data and health and the application of artificial intelligence in various fields. The event will take place on the 19th and 20th of September in the Rectorate's Auditorium and is open to everyone. The deadline to sign up is September 13.

The first day has been organized as a space for reflection and debate on topics of great relevance today in ethics and research. The inaugural conference, titled "A New Ethics for a New Era", is given by Dirk Lanzerath, professor of Philosophy at the University of Bonn and director of the German Reference Center for Ethics in the Life Sciences. Other speakers who participate are Lluís Montoliu, deputy director of the Centre Nacional de Biotecnologia (CNB-CSIC), who discusses the present and future of animal experimentation; Jordi Cortadella, from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, on ethics and artificial intelligence, and Itziar Lecuona, from Observatori de Bioètica de la Universitat de Barcelona, ¿¿on big data in health sciences.

The second day has a marked institutional character, intending to recognize the work and dedication of all the members and staff who have served the CERec. The book "30 Years of Ethical Research at the UAB", by José Luis Molina, director of the Committee, will also be presented there.

In a pioneering initiative throughout the state, the CERec was born in 1994 to guarantee rigor, honesty, and responsibility in the research carried out at the University. "In these years, multiple researchers and researchers from the campus, as well as assigned technical staff, have selflessly advised more than 6,000 research projects on their ethical side, spreading the values ¿¿of good research among training staff and senior staff at the campus in a dialogue that has just begun. In the future, we hope that Catalan, national, and European research institutions at different levels will help us with self-evaluation tools to make the work of research ethics committees more sustainable", says José Luis Molina.

The UAB rector, Javier Lafuente, and the vice-rector of Research, Assumpció Malgosa, will open and close the event, respectively.
