The Institute of Physics of Altes Energies (IFAE), at the UAB, is the coordinating institution of the Horizon Europe INFRA-DEV ET-PP project, aimed at building a European gravitational wave observatory. The project will last 4 years with a total budget of 3.45 million euros and is made up of leading research centers from 11 countries.

Researchers at ICFO and UAB, in Barcelona, use the coldest systems in the universe to realize in the laboratory gauge theories, key models of modern physics that describe the fundamental forces of Nature and the behavior of complex quantum materials.  

We deeply regret to inform of the death on Tuesday 5 July of Jordi García Orellana, researcher and secretary at ICTA-UAB, and associate professor of the Department of Physics at the UAB.

Department of Physics professor Andreas Winter received the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for his contributions in the area of quantum information.

Researchers working with the MAGIC collaboration, an international consortium including the participation of the UAB, detected very high-energy gamma rays from a recurrent nova in the Milky Way. The results of these observations and new findings on the stellar explosions were recently published in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Researchers from the UAB, IFAE and University College London propose using the variations in distance between the Earth and the Moon, which can be measured with a precision of less than a centimeter, as a new gravitational wave detector within a frequency range that current devices cannot detect. The research, which could pave the way for the detection of signals from the early universe, was published recently in Physical Review Letters.

A research led by researchers at the Department of Physics of the UAB has managed to emulate learning neuromorphic abilities using thin layers of cobalt oxide. The experiment, performed at the ALBA Synchrotron, is a new step towards brain-inspired computers.

The European project “Magnetic Metasurfaces for sustainable Information and Communication Technologies” (MetaMagIC), coordinated by ICMAB-CSIC with the involvement of the UAB, will address the efficiency and sustainability of the magnetic devices currently used in Information and Communication Technologies.

DESI has already mapped out more galaxies than all previous 3-D surveys combined — and it’s just getting started. Several Spanish institutions participate in the project: IFAE and ICE-CSIC, at the UAB campus; ICCUB; CIEMAT and IFT/UAM.
