Ricardo Orozco Collection

Ricardo Orozco Muñoz (1919–2011), born in Valencia, was a journalist, writer, and playwright. Orozco’s interest in literature and journalism emerged within his family environment, inspired by the literary gatherings he shared with his brother and father. His career as a writer was deeply influenced by Spain’s political context. During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), he worked as a journalist for La Hora in Valencia and La Vanguardia in Barcelona. At the end of the war, he attempted to flee Spain but was captured and interned in a concentration camp, from which he managed to escape. Subsequently, he was compelled to complete military service, a period he used to write poems and plays.

In 1943, during the post-war period, he moved to Barcelona, where he worked as a translator and proofreader for several publishing houses. A few years later, he returned to Valencia, and in 1950, he founded El Sobre Literario, a cultural, literary, and artistic magazine. However, the magazine had to close in 1957 due to persistent Francoist censorship. That same year, Orozco chose to go into exile in Buenos Aires, where he worked for various publishing houses and contributed to newspapers such as La Voz Interior and La Nación.

In 1977, after Spain’s democratic transition, he returned to his hometown, Valencia, where he resumed writing articles. Additionally, he maintained an active correspondence with members of the Fondo de Cultura Económica, a prominent Mexican publishing group.

The Humanities Library holds a portion of Ricardo Orozco’s personal collection, as most of it is housed at the Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE). The archive has been catalogued thanks to the collaboration between the Humanities Library and the Department of Catalan Philology.
